A time management tool for business mums

September 2nd, 2008

If you’re anything like me, it can be hard to keep track of time and can forget appointments. I remember a few weeks back getting a phone call from my parents office (where I had a meeting) letting me know that the people I was meeting with had arrived & asking where I was!

The girls from A Good Sort posted a great suggestion on their blog. Use your mobile phone to help keep you organised! Most phones, especially more modern ones, have a reminder function. This is a brilliant suggestion and can help us all remember when we have meetings, or even remember to pick up the kids from school (if that’s an issue).

Now I have to find out whether my phone has that function on it (it’s ancient!), or upgrade.

Congratulations Cathleen

Great marketing ideas

September 1st, 2008

I see a lot of ideas from WAHMs and business mums in my travels, and thought I’d share some great ones with you.

  • Suz’s Space preloved books - Suzie has created some fantastic magnetic bookmarks to promote her business. These are sent out with orders and used as promotional products in goodie bags. Given what she does, these are perfect promotional products for her business.
  • Spring Style Hunt - This is the brainchild of Anne from Beauty Banquet. In the lead up to this years Spring Racing Carnival, a number of style-based businesses are getting together to promote themselves and each other and give those involved in the hunt some great prizes. This is fun for the customer as well as a great way for the businesses involved to promote themselves.
  • Love Santa - Last year I received a recipe card from Love Santa with a recipe for gingerbread that “Santa will love on Christmas Eve”. This was a great promotional tool as it tied in nicely with the Santa letters on offer as well as being useful. The kids enjoyed making gingerbread in the lead up to Christmas.

These are just three that I’ve found. I’ll share some more in coming posts. If you’ve found a great promotional idea, please let me know.

My-Shop.com.au

August 31st, 2008

My-Shop.com.auIf you are starting out in business and looking for a cost effective shopping cart, complete with hosting, then My-Shop.com.au is what you have been looking for. This is an Austrlian made solution to the start up business mum’s dilemma of finding something affordable.

When you set up your account, you will find a number of different template that already exist and are quite easy to edit with a bit of knowledge. I found when setting up my shop that it helps to read the manuals first! There were a few times I couldn’t work out what to do and was about to send a frustrated email off to the business owners, only to find that when I read the manual the answers were there!

This is a basic shop, without the bells and whistles of more expensive options, however it is easy to set up and you can have a professional looking shop for only $5 a month if you use a sub domain of My-Shop.com.au or $10 a month with a domain name.

To check out the shop I set up up, go to http://wahmbookshop.my-shop.com.au/ or visit www.my-shop.com.au for more information and to sign up.

Another great feature is the directory of shops and products they have on their home page. This gives your shop extra exposure for no extra cost.

Market Research - is it really that important?

August 28th, 2008

There are two comments I often hear from business mums:

  • “I can’t start my business yet, I’m still doing market research”
  • “I don’t have time to find out what my customers really think”

These show different thoughts about market research for your business. Market research is important in any business, especially ongoing research to see if you are still meeting the needs of your market.

Donna-Marie Coggins wrote a fantastic article on Market Research in Issue 11 of the magazine. She talks about assumptions small business owners make and how this can be dangerous.

It is important to understand your market and what makes them tick, and the sorts of products and services they want to buy, and it doesn’t have to be an expensive process. It can be as easy as sending a survey to your customers to get their feedback.

To read Donna-Marie’s full article, purchase Issue 11 of the Business Mums Magazine. Another resource to help you with market research is the Quick Dirty Guide to Market Research by Candice Edye.

Buff Mineral Cosmetics - Custom blend foundation

August 23rd, 2008

Buff Mineral CosmeticsLike many women, my skin is not a standard shade and I have difficulty finding foundation the right colour for my skin. Up until recently, I have used foundation colours that were close enough, but not perfect.

A few weeks ago, I had the great pleasure of having Leighta Bennett from Buff Mineral Cosmetics around to custom blend some foundation for me. Her kit looks a lot like a chemists kit, however she expertly tried different combinations to find the perfect shade foundation for me.

So now, not only do I have foundation the perfect colour for my skin, but it is also very easy to apply. The best thing about it, even more than the colour, is that it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing foundation! So, for any busy business mum, cutom blended foundation from Buff Mineral Cosmetics is a must have in your make up kit.
